Opera 2005 in jeopardy
All of us here at Civic Trust House are sad to hear of the Arts Council's cutting of all funding to Opera 2005 for the coming year 2009. We feel passionately that Opera 2005 have done a fantastic job up to now of nurturing opera in Cork - through their productions, their Young Artists Programme and their education programme. As a company they have been great housemates and very active participants in life at Civic Trust House. For media coverage on the issue please see:

A Facebook group, 'Save Opera 2005 Cork' has been set up by performers who have had the opportunity to work with the company and fans, it can be found at: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=57072769851

While the loss of funding means that Opera 2005 cannot keep their office here we will be giving the board any support we can going forward so the company can find its feet again before long.

Investigating Our History
With the help of art & landscape historian Louise Harrington of TKB Southgate Associates we have put in an application for funding from the Department of Heritage to carry out a re-evaluation of the historic joinery in the building.

The idea came about when conservation engineer Christopher Southgate visited the house for research purposes as he is involved in conserving a building from the same period in Emmet's Place. He observed that the wooden panelling on the second floor was quite different to that leading up to it, and suggested that it may pre-date the current estimated building of Civic Trust House, possibly to the 17th Century, which would make our home even older than is currently thought.

Forensic methods and research into Cork's built history have both developed significantly since the building was first assessed and Louise proposes to use these developments to re-evaluate the building's history through the joinery here. If the application is successful the findings will be presented in a public worksop here at Civic Trust House in 2010 and possibly in a publication.

EU Cultural Diploma
In my capacity as building administrator at Civic Trust House I am excited to have been one of 20 European cultural managers accepted onto an exciting postgraduate course. The EU Diploma in Cultural Project Management is run by the Fondation Marcel Hicter in Belgium and the residential parts of the course this year will be in Ireland and Spain. It aims to further our knowledge of cultural policy, management skills, and crucially to develop a European network of cultural managers who can work together on cross-border projects. We will also gain valuable guidance on fundraising and how to access EU funding.

As part of the application we each submitted a project, which we will develop as part of our training (these projects may change considerably during the course). The project I submitted is research-based - 'Making Civic Trust House a Civic Cultural Resource'. I hope to establish how best we can extend the reach of the unique atmosphere and activity of Civic Trust House beyond the building's walls and the companies' staff to the wider community - to the benefit of both the community and the companies resident here. I hope to do this partly through community consultation, and am keen to use Art of Hosting and Open Space technology. (Nicki ffrench Davis)
