No. 10: published Monday 17th May 2010
Available Light at basementprojectspace

Cork Film Centre's Maximilian Le Cain has a solo exhibition opening tomorrow evening, Tuesday 18th May, at 6 in BasementProjectSpace - just a minute's walk away on Camden Quay and continuing until the 30th.
Max has made short and medium-length films and videos for a decade or so, and is the editor of the online magazine Experimental Conversations. His work is experimental and personal; it includes narrative, documentary, and video art installation, although it mostly wanders restlessly somewhere between those categories. (He was described at a dinner party this writer attended last week as 'one of Cork's few genuine intellectuals', ...by one of the others, of course.) Max is generally the last person to leave Civic Trust House most evenings - see his artist's statement for the exhibition here.
The highlight of the exhibition's run will be on Thursday 27th May when Max gives a 90-minute screening and Artist's Talk on 7 of his short films. Although the screening contains strobing light effects and graphic sexual
imagery (please take note) Le Cain's incisive eloquence and
"cinema of cuts, plastic and hypnotic, where the interstices of sense prefigure the outer surface of all images" (see Esperanza Collado) are just as likely to disturb.

Plasticine taking shape

With tickets already selling well for Corcadorca's upcoming show, Plasticine (see Cork Midsummer Festival Plasticine ), director Pat Kiernan is working with his cast in the sprawling space of the Savoy which will be will become " the seedy world of a contemporary Russian city - pulsating with anger, vitality and destruction".
In the dark and distorted world of the play, where the delinquent antihero Maxim lives amidst the backdrop
of murder, abuse and exploitation, there is a deep sense of
humanity and even humor that trickles through. Scaffolding will be installed this week as work begins to transform the entire Savoy, once the country's biggest cinema with over 2,000 seats, under the direction of Corcadorca's visionary set designer Paul Keoghan.
The cast is led by Caoilfhionn Dunne as Maxim, with Noelle Browne, Sorcha Fox, Conor MacNeill, Conor Madden, Michael Winder, Mark D’Aughton, Janice Byrne and Lorna Quinn completing the line-up. The community cast have been chosen at recent auditions which attracted a huge amount of interest.
