Free summer Big Band gig
from Cork Jazz Festival

The multi-award winning Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra, which has toured worldwide for almost 30 years, will be hosted by Cork Jazz Festival on August 12th for a free performance in the luxuriously renovated Bodega on the city’s iconic Coal Quay.
The repertoire is extensive and features music from Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Les Brown, Ted Heath, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson and many others. In addition it also features original works composed especially for the Orchestra.
Under the experienced leadership of Ian Darrington, who was awarded the MBE for his services to music in 2001, the Orchestra’s reputation is such that touring has become a major part of a very busy schedule - one that includes over fifty performances per year. Since 1985 the Orchestra has released fourteen albums and a forty-minute documentary video. The BBC World Service has featured tracks by the Orchestra taking the music of Wigan’s youth to well over fifty countries.
This highly skilled and enthusiastic big band will lift the roof from 9pm on August 12 th in a free performance, bringing that festival feeling to a summer’s evening at the Bodega.

Heritage Week at Civic Trust House

For the first time Civic Trust Hosue is taking part in National Heritage week and we are delighted to be offering a programme of varied events across the week.
One of the highlights of will surely be a presentation by Anne Bernstorff on the stunning Ros Tapestry. This national treasure in-the-making is too big and too precious to move from the exhibition centre in New Ross, but the charismatic artist’s talks on the research, artistry and skill behind the 15-panel tapestry are becoming legends in themselves! In a beautifully illustrated presentation, Bernstorff will tell the story of this massive community initative in progress in County Wexford. Conceived in 1998 and being developed by over a hundred dedicated volunteers, including stitchers who travel to Wexford from Cork, it is Ireland’s newest national treasure.
The Ros Tapestries depict events around the Anglo-Norman arrival to the South East of Ireland, specifically the founding of the town of New Ross, Co. Wexford by William Marshall and Isabel de Clare. The content for these tapestry panels was exhaustively researched and designed by Bernstorff, whose talk will take place at 7.30pm on Friday August 27th at Civic Trust House, entry is free.
