LIFELONG
LEARNING FESTIVAL
AT CIVIC TRUST HOUSE
Want to learn a Cork song? Get started acting or film-making? Get
to know something about jazz? Express yourself through poetry? In
our first year participating in the festival we hope to share some
of our knowledge and enthusiasm for our work here at Civic Trust
House through a free week-long programme as part of Cork Lifelong
Learning Festival March 30th - April 5th 2009.
We also hope to learn from visitors by hosting two
conversations. The first will bring together a group of arts managers
and experts from the community sector to consider the audience for
the arts in Cork - who benefits most from Cork's cultural life and
how we can best serve the community.
The second conversation brings together people involved
in managing heritage buildings across Cork city with experts in
conservation, architecture and environmental management in order
to explore how best to approach the challenges of managing heritage
buildings responsibly.

CORK
INTERNATIONAL
CHORAL FESTIVAL
The Choral Festival office is a hive of activity now with the festival
just a little over a month away. With some four and a half thousand
singers visiting the city from all across the world there is a huge
amount of planning to be done!
As ever the 'Gala' evening concerts will present some
of the finest choirs from across the world with something to suit
all tastes. For spectacular bombast and excitement check out the
opening
concert (more below), for some 'easy'-listening of the highest
quality Finland's Club
for Five are the hot tip, for cutting-edge chamber singing Germany's
Singer
Pur will no doubt astound, while our own National
Chamber Choir under the direction of world-famous Paul Hillier
have put together a tantalising programme entitled From the Sublime
to the Ridiculous.
The centrepiece of the festival, the Fleischmann
International Trophy Competition is highly competitive and very
exciting, fans of the nail-biting excitement of TV talent shows
can get a real live fix at City Hall!
The festival also features many national competitions
and free events, check out the website for more.
This year the website includes helpful audio clips
to help in making decisions between the huge variety of concerts
on offer - take a trip to the Events page of the festival website
and get exploring the programme - http://corkchoral.ie/index.php/events-2009.html
EMERGENCY BIRTH OF THE CSO FESTIVAL CHORUS!
Sadly the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir had to cancel their
trip to Cork to perform alongside the Harlow Chorus with Cork Symphony
Orchestra for the opening concert of this year's Choral Festival.
Unfazed, conductor of the orchestra (and member of
the Internationally-acclaimed RTE Vanbrugh String Quartet) Keith
Pascoe set about putting together an impressive choir comprising
some of the finest singers in Cork, not to mention some familiar
instrumentalists and music professionals whose arms may not have
been twisted successfully by anyone else!
As a proud member of this 'emergency' chorus I can
report that rehearsals are going very well, we have had our first
rehearsal with the orchestra already and by Wednesday 29th April
I think Cork can expect an unforgettable concert.
Despite having a fair amount of choral experience
I can safely say I have never sung more exciting words than Walt
Whitman's - powerful images of thundering steamers, billowing sails,
busy ports, storms and vast expanses of ocean ... and Ralph Vaughan
Williams' hugely expressive music really brings it alive. (Nicki
