VIDEO-ART TRAIL THIS WEEK
Art Trail and Cork Film Centre are working together to put on a free video-art event this week which will take place in 5 popular Cork city bars. Each bar will be showing a different set of videos by a wide range of artists with showings from 6-8pm on Thursday 23rd, Friday 24th and Saturday 25th April.

The trail is part of a series of 'research events' where the organisers will be looking for feedback from both audience and artists on their views and involvements with various artforms.

The event will be launched tonight at the Roundy Bar on Castle Street where all the works will be shown. To find out which artists are taking part and see which venues are on the trail please visit www.arttrail.ie

FREE & FRINGE EVENTS CHORAL FEST
Last month's newsletter gave a preview and tips for the main Gala concerts in Cork International Choral Festival which runs for 5 days nexy week from 29th April - 3rd of May. There's a great variety for all tastes - you can read the article again here or check the Choral Festival website for details.

The festival also makes a huge effort to bring free events to the city (thanks to public support of the Gala concerts!). Last year's dawn chorus in the iconic St Anne's in Shandon was a huge success - this year Cathal O'Baoill and the Gothenburg Youth Choir will perform for the Shandon Sunrise from the bell tower to reward early risers with a very special moment. Gather at 5.40am outside the church! Other free highlights include:

  • Brigham Young University Singers from the USA at 11am in Cork City Library on Thursday 30th April
  • Chamber Choir Gallerie from Finland at 1pm in Cork School of Music on Thursday 30th April
  • Nidaros Cathedral Girls Choir from Norway in the Lewis Glucksmann Gallery UCC at 6pm on Thursday 30th April
  • Slovenia's Ptuj Male Voice Choir at 2pm in Tory Top Library in Ballyphehane on Friday 1st May
  • Italy's I Madrigali di Perugia who will perform a selection of Italian madrigals at 5pm on Tuesday May 5th at 5pm in the Honan Chapel in UCC

FIRST HINTS OF WHAT'S IN STORE
Cork Midsummer Festival have begun to give eager culture vultures some lip-smacking tastes of what's in store between 13th-28th June this year.

One event bound to make a huge impact to life in the city will be the 4th AIB Street Performance World Championships which will take place in Cork for the first time. With 31 international acts from across the globe coming to town, to compete in 5 locations in Fitzgerald's Park, this free event will be spectacularly entertaining and who knows may inspire a whole new generation of performance artists to bring life to the streets of Cork and beyond.

Meanwhile Corcadorca are busy preparing for their production of medEia, a modern version of the Greek tragedy written in 1998 by Oscar van Woensel of Amsterdam's Dead Horse (Dood Paard) Company. The play is an inventive contemporary retelling of Euripides' story which mixes humour and emotion - extremely relevant to our life and times, medEia is bound to create a big stir.

There are plenty more tips for the festival (including this year's production by hit of the 2008 fest Hammergrin theatre company, a visiting Edinburgh Fringe First Winner and this year's Spiegeltent) published in the current Midsummer Festival Newsletter - sign up for it now be the first to know what's happening by clicking here>>>

LIFELONG LEARNING SUCCESS

Our first Lifelong Learning Week brought alot of action and knowledge-sharing to the house, many thanks to the organisers for including us.

On Monday 31st March a group of 16 visitors from arts and social projects around the city joined 6 of us from the house to have a lively conversation workshop exploring how we can expand the audience for the arts in Cork. A social networking site has been set up so we can carry on the conversation - there's a full report of the event published there, if you're interested in the idea please become a member and get involved! Click here to visit >>>

Bill Johnson's jazz talk was very popular with the audience and Pat Kiernan's acting workshop enthused a fun group to bring alot of life and noise to the boardroom! A small but interested audience braved the torrential rain to learn more about the Film Centre's activities and enjoy film and video, while William Hammond's folk song workshop brought together a group of all ages who shared lively stories with us of life in a Cork so different from today.

Past and present also came together for the conversation about Maintaining Heritage Buildings which featured a very interesting and useful presentation by Christopher Southgate. If you would like to see a copy of the notes please email me at info@civictrusthouse.ie . Representatives from 10 significant Cork historical buildings and 8 specialists and consultants attended and hopefully will work together again in the future.
